Speaking of Which – Shouldn’t We All Be Millionaires By Now?

Dear Readers

I was watching a programme on the television last night, where an ordinary guy who had been made outrageously rich by Camelot (the UK Lottery Distribution Company), was asked the question as to whether his

Who Doesn't Want to Be a Millionaire?

£22.7m overnight fortune had changed him? Wouldn’t you just love that question to be put to you? Who doesn’t want to be a millionaire?

Below is a post I made over at Warrior Forum, one of the best-read and cherished “Make money Online” forums that there is on the internet. Having only ever posted one timid 2-lined comment before, some months ago, I was looking out for some good topics of discussion that I could get involved with, and hopefully add something worthwhile to. This is the topic I first picked, because it is something we have all heard, or said ourselves, or may still even be thinking now in our minds, even if we no longer voice it out loud.

This was the beginning of that thread, originally posted in the Forum,  and the link can be found at the end of this article:

If IM is so easy, as explained in all the landing pages I see and have had advice to make the same kind of page, why aren’t we all rich and rolling in it? Is there anyone on this forum that can honestly say they make a GOOD living doing IM? And if there are – any tips you’re willing to give? I understand that it does take time and a lot of R&D on your own part, but I’m sure someone has it down pat and might be able to make some comments here, and help the rest of us out that aren’t doing so hot, in something that we honestly think could be enough to support yourself on?

Squeeze page syndrome no longer rings true, does it? The effects of the brainwashing are beginning to wear off, isn’t is, as we shake our heads, wake up and angrily start to demand some answers.

“Show me the money, then!” Been there. And the advice for the newly enlightened? ‘Now you’re free to go out into the big wide world, the real world, and find the real money for yourself’. And truth is: didn’t we always know that, deep down? If we could really have push-button cash, we would all have RSI (repetitive strain injury) from pushing the button all day long.

But…what I’ve sussed out is that, (if my halfpenny of wisdom counts for anything) we are NOT all cut out to be Internet Marketers. Internet Marketing revolves around a skill that you need to have a passion to acquire and an aptitude to master. Know what it is?

DIALOGUE

However you put it – in writing, in pictures, in video – to make it on the internet you have to learn the age-old art of communication. And not just any old boring, been said a tri-zillion times, re-hashed brown nonsense! Yes, someone out there may not have heard it yet, but I have and I’ve heard enough!

The Cyber-World wants to engage with real people: one’s who have personality, a sense of humour, a past, present and an uncertain but realistic future. One’s with believable experiences, losses & failures, credible characters, genuine achievements, expectancy and capabilities. I’m talking flesh and blood PEOPLE, not CYBER-SUPERMEN!

So, I’ll come to a close very soon.

The information highway requires people who can keep up with the flow of traffic but who don’t just get their kicks from driving around just to be flash, then smash and dash off with the cash!

The information highway requires signposts & pit-stops, cafes and motels; schools and banks and theatres and shops. Is that making any sense? What I mean to say is, online works a lot like offline (didn’t we already know that? Have we mysteriously forgotten?) If you can communicate to others how they can do something they want to, where they can find something they are looking for, what they should pay for something they want etc. etc. etc. – they will listen to you.

As the good old saying goes (which I only learned about a month ago), people will begin to know, like and trust you – and then they will heed your advice and follow your lead. Oh, did I say the in-ter-net is about net-working? Relationships? Too obvious. But even that didn’t sink in till recently.

Success online, in my newly formed opinion, is not about making money – it’s about making friends. Once you have a few (million) friends online, even if you sell them a soft-drink each, well…

Hope you can relate in some way to my perspective: it’s genuine, because I’m a real person. Are you???

    Awesome post!

First off, that is a big pile of money. Imagine just taking a stack everyday before you head out of the house to spend it, how awesome!

You are so right about how times have changed for Internet Marketers. Unfortunately, Internet Marketing has developed a bad persona, kind of like used car salesman (no offense intended to used car salesman); people hate to see you coming for fear of being pressured and ripped off. If you are going to be successful in the business you have to build relationships, actually you have to build good relationships. You need to marketing to people and not sell to people, hence the term Internet Marketing, right?

Now you’ve got me focusing on the money.
That mountain of crisp unused banknotes was actually a whopping £100,000,000 (£100m) representing 91% of the total £110m Jackpot a lucky winner could haul away to become the UK’s largest ever Lottery Winner in 2009.

I’m not sure of the actual outcome of that draw, but now that you’ve started to dismantle the mountain of moolah in my mind, one wadge of notes at a time, I’m actually starting to think about what I might spend it on!

You see anything that’s broken down into smaller units becomes more manageable, we can compute it more readily and process it within our frame of reference.

Just one wadge of notes – small enough to fit into my handbag (or purse to some). That’s £50 for my hairdresser – or maybe even £100! Then a few hundred for 2 pairs of shoes – or 3 at a squeeze. Then the new glam 3 piece outfit – with matching bag (big enough to stuff the remaining wonga in and throw out that old crinkled used up bag, who needs it? Can’t stand the sight of it any longer. I loathe it, darling!)

Then the night out at the “Thea-ay-dah” in good old London Town; with posh restaurant din-dins as well, of course. How much? £300? £400? Hold on – the money’s dwindling fast, almost gone and I’ve still got to get back home to Luton!I’ve got to get home! (There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home…follow the road, there’s no place like home…).

Hold up, wait a minute. It’s only a picture, it’s not real. You see what the imagination can do? I had better stop right there, before I get carried away.

So thank you again for your comment, Rick. I must pop over to read your latest blog post entitled: “Why do You want to make money online?”
My short answer? Don’t know really; to tell you the truth, I’ve never even thought about it… :)

      @Rick,

Good comment. I agree internet marketing does have a bad persona these days. There is so much over selling done that it drives people awaaaaaaaaaay.

I will stop by your blog to see what’s going over there. Your most recent article “Why Do You Want To Make Money Online” looks interesting to me.

I answer that question completely on my blog right here. It is mostly because my job ends in about 78 days, I have to replace my income. That is a summary is what my quest is about.

    Hey Jaycee,

Really good post. I’ve been over at the Warrior forums a little bit too and there are a lot of people who seem to be jaded.

You make an excellent point about building relationships. That’s really what it all comes down to. You need to have a good relationship with whoever you are working with online, your list, your partners, your readers. Without the relationship there is nothing that separates you from the other hundred million people out there (like on the warrior forum) trying to sell there products.

Great post! (really good writing too)

      Hi Darren

Nice to hear from you, my friend

It’s amazing how quickly one can feel they have made friends , even online, as long as you are engaging from the heart, the soul, the spirit, the true person.

Though I have only heard one or two of you fellow marketers speaking on video recordings, and then no more than once, yet when I read your blog posts and comments, I can hear your voices in my mind as if I really were getting to know you. It’s amazing. Like pen pals without the snails.

I think now that we newbies have been blogging so avidly for about one month, the shyness and carefully worded praises have gone., as well, and we are being more open and honest with our comments. I don’t mean to say anyone hasn’t been genuine in praising each other’s efforts before: I think a very high proportion, if not all, of the MWA3.0 students have done exceptionally well with blog content in such a short amount of time.

As for you, Darren L Carter? I remember how your site looked the first day you put it up, plain and simple, but out there to be seen. And I recall the tentative blog post that you first made, followed very swiftly by an explosion of excitement, and passion-filled inspiration. I remember how you said that you had suddenly dropped your laundry to run to a room to be able to write down some of the ideas that were coming to you, so fast and furious.

And I can truly say of all the Internet Marketers I have been following thus far, your rapid rise to a high-standard of excellence, wit and kudos has been the most remarkable to observe.

I just thought I’d share that. Hey, as discussed on Scott Barron’s recent post – it’s my blog and I can write about whatever I like! Ner!

    Hey Jaycee,

Another remarkably well written post this time about the classic question I have heard a million times before.

And no wonder this question comes up again and again: Our internet marketing community (when looking at the whole picture, I am certainly not talking about our little community of friends who are here to make a difference) deserves its bad reputation.

Too many people are sold on one big push button dream after the other and they are often ripped off and than let alone by marketers who do not care about their customers success at all. There is an abundance of scorched cyber earth due to the described practice but still I cling (and will not let go until I succeed) to this internet marketing dream. Why? Because of course there are also countless decent marketers all over the world on a genuine mission to help people succeed in whatever they want to achieve. Great people sharing their knowledge and selling their information to satisfy the needs and wants of people all over the world. These are the marketers I learn from and this is the information marketing modell I am pursuing myself. I am real, I hold myself accountable and I want to be proud of what I market. I am here to make a difference!

To me the internet marketing business modell augurs freedom. Freedom to work from any place around the world. Freedom from a 9to5 job and freedom to leverage technology to get my message out there in countless ways. I love internet marketing despite all negative aspects and I am not going to apologize for being an internet marketer.

Thanks for bringing this topic up. Can´t wait to read your next post.

      Hi Mirko

A very thought-provoking response, thank you.

Let’s hope a golden phoenix of hope, destiny, purity and strength, can rise from the blinding ashes of this horribly scorched cyber earth.

I am reminded of the film Matrix: hope for a better future never dies. The desire to be free and to live and to love, never dies.

And now we find ourselves here, today, as the up-and-coming cyber generation. And we have a choice before us. We can follow in the footsteps of our largely degenerate predecessors, copycatting their corrupted practices or, we can stop the rot, draw a line in the sand and do things right from here on in.

We can re-evaluate the cyberspace we live in.

A marketplace that offers re-packaged junk will always hold an attraction to those of narrow minds, gullible natures and limited foresight. Please forgive me if I sound elitist, I am not, but it is unfortunatley the truth.

The Delboy Trotters’ of this world woo and win with their hypnotic, quickfire, witty, open-air sales pitches; but only fools and horses… (go out in the midday sun). Firesale squeeze pages look so attractive to bask in but they burn us almost to a crisp, and lead us almost to delirium.

Now for those of us who value quality, we must be prepared to work hard to provide it, knowing that quality does not come cheap: we will need to sow time and effort into creating valuable, worthwhile, premium products, but the good news? We can be confident that those who appreciate those same attributes in a product, will buy from us willingly, happy to pay the extra for it, satisfied that they have received value for money.

I totally agree with everything you say, Mirko. To me, too, the internet marketing business augurs freedom. As it says in the bible: ” – as free, but not using our liberty as a cloak for vice” (1 Peter 2:16).

Alex Jeffreys is a perfect example of this. he did copycat the fat cats for a while, as he admits, but his inner character and deeper value system convicted him to be true to his better nature and to endeavour to remain ethical in his business dealings.

This is a huge topic, and so I’ll end here and let others join in. Working through this topic might just be a fundamental part of the web 3.0 internet marketing revolution that has already begun. Between us we can develop something new, I really think so.

What can we do differently to those who were the first and second generation internet marketers? (I feel as if we are ushering in the third wave, and
      that nearly always brings change).

How can we remain ethical in our practices even as we profit from our prospects?

When should we sell as opposed to give away free?

Readers, over to you. Mirko, you are on point.

Please join in the debate and let’s see if we can’t produce the framework for a great future.

      Regards

      Jaycee

You’re a natural interviewer. You give David enough space to get his point across without interrupting, but you show that you are actively listening by the small ongoing acknowledgements you make. And you’re questions are interesting and well thought out. I’m really enjoying listening to the whole interview.

I haven’t done any videos or anything like that yet. I’m working on getting some kind of traffic first , thorugh the blog, on Twitter, and forums etc. and during doing that I will start to work on some video marketing.

I loved your statement “Success online, in my newly formed opinion, is not about making money – it’s about making friends.” That’s true indeed.

Like in the off-line world business is based on relationships and trust. You have to show that you deliver value and you’re truly committed to help others.

Hi Estani (I can call you that now cos I’ve posted on your blog, and i’m getting to know you!)

Thank you for the encouragement. And thank you for highlighting the most significant part of what I shared in that post – making friends.

Believe it or not, I have a problem. Not necessarily with making friends, but with keeping them. I am not very good at relationship building – offline anyway, online, I’m not doing too bad!

Truth is, I can sometimes start up friendships with extreme enthusiasm, so much to talk about, so many shared interests and beliefs, but then, over a period of weeks and months, I let those relationships dwindle, peter out and sometimes even die from neglect. Telephone messages not replied to; promised visits never fulfilled.

And it’s not even through a direct lack of care: I may be thinking of those friends fondly on and off all the time. It’s more through a restrictive shyness on my own part, a sense of insecurity, a feeling that my life, my experiences somehow aren’t enough to merit another’s attention and time, so I don’t like to bother people., I don’t like to put myself in the limelight.

You know, many of us are quite complex people. We can love, yet seem cold. We can hate, but yet smile. We can be afraid, yet be first in line for something dangerous. We can be sad and yet laugh the loudest of all.

But complex structures can be simplified if someone understands how to unravel things that have become tangled. And understanding the need to build relationships online, may just help me to be a better friend offline, too.

Online I understand that I must speak with my readers on a regular basis: they won’t keep stopping by if I don’t have anything to say to them. And I understand that when they leave a message, I need to reply to it as soon as I can – it’s very rude not to. And online I have learned that people do like to spend time with me, to listen to what I have to say and that they value my opinion and experience.

Online, I am learning that being me is just fine, and it’s about time. ;)

I’m looking out for more of your copywriting tips, Estani, so have some stuff ready, I’m coming to visit you soon.

We’re together in this course and I really believe that people like you are going to change the whole face of internet marketing.

You are spot on about building relationships and I might add that it goes beyond your customers, it really applies to anything and everything that you do in life.

It’s really amazing what type of relationships you can build in this world wide web as it is a huge place! The most important thing to understand is that behind every computer is a person. A person like me and you who has a family, who is going through the same thing we’re going through and who is faced with many challenges, frustrations, success, happiness and all the other emotions one can have.

If you can have someone that can relate to you in one way or another than that right there is golden because as you said if you have built one million friends and you ask them each for a dollar, they’d be glad to give it then you can really become a millionaire!

Good job in posting this to the forum, I’m sure you’ll get a lot of responses. By the way, thanks for making me cry (I love crying), when I read your reply on Darren’s blog, you’ll know which one:)

Relationships can be easily overlooked as bloggers get too carried away with checking and improving their stats and sales. Eventually, it becomes easier and easier to forget that that your links being clicked are being made by real people with real challenges and problems.

      H Walter

Thank you so much for posting to my blog. I popped over to yours and see that you are a very avid and popular blogger yourself, so I am privileged to have you come over and share with me.

I like how you put your last statement in terms of ‘earning’ authority.

When I was training as a youthworker, I was taught to listen to the young people for a season and to take time before offering them any advice: first I needed to gain their trust and therefore earn the ‘right’ to speak into their lives.

That concept is very similar to what happens online.

What right do we have to expect people to read our word and swallow every line, hook, line and sinker? Or to buy our ebooks, when they don’t know anyhing about who wrote it? Authority comes from authorship – knowing the author – and trusting them by dint of their reputation.

We need to get talked about online to build a reputation – and pray that it is a good one!

As the author of our own blogs, we can become an authority in many areas – especially an authoriy on ourselves – who we are, what we know, what we like or don’t like, what we recommend or disapprove of, etc. etc.

We can become an authority on many things not just because we say that we are, but because our readers believe that we are and hab=ve learned to trust us. And once we earn that trust, and gain that authority, let’s not misuse is, abuse it and let anyone down.

As you rightly say, Walter, that kind of honesty and transparency is a key to true success. Success based on lies will one day be exposed (it always is) and its never a pretty sight.

Thank you so much for your wise words.

Rather than just hoping that someone will chance by our affiliate link, somewhere, somehow, and just feel led to buy our product, just – because, we can expect people to deliberately come to our affiliate link becasue we have a level of online presence and positive repsonses.

It can work the other way, I’m sure. I’ve read about people making money from a cold start, and it can’t all be lies, surely? But, as agreed, its more likely to work in our favour, when people feel they can trust us and they buy based on our recommendation and because they expect value from us.

      Jason
I’ve just checked out your blog and left a comment and subscribed to your RSS for posts and comments. Truly awesome. We can DO THIS.
